While there has been great progress in LGBTQ+ visibility and equality since Stonewall, there are still obstacles that we face as a community.

This act of resistance is considered the catalyst for the modern gay civil rights movement and the Stonewall Inn was designated a national monument by President Barack Obama in 2016. Fed up with police harassment and social discrimination, patrons clashed with police forces over the next three nights. Police raids on gay establishments were not uncommon at that time and queer people caught in a raid risked arrest, being ostracized by their families, employment/housing discrimination, and even institutionalization. In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, New York City police officers raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. Why do we celebrate Pride? The celebration of LGBT+ Pride Month is to commemorate the Stonewall Riots of 1969.
